AEO is best understood as a measurable business practice, not a list of secret tactics for influencing a model.
AgenQuest’s working definition: Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the systematic work of improving and measuring how AI-mediated discovery systems find, understand, substantiate, cite, and recommend an entity for relevant customer questions.
The word observable matters. A marketing team can inspect whether its information is accessible, whether an AI answer describes the company accurately, whether the company appears in a relevant shortlist, which sources are cited, and whether people arrive on the website. It usually cannot see a model’s complete internal process or prove that one page, mention, or technical change caused a recommendation.
That boundary turns AEO from a mythology about “winning AI” into a discipline a skeptical marketing leader can evaluate.
Why the definition matters
Without a working definition, AEO absorbs almost any activity that touches a website, a brand, or an AI tool. Ordinary SEO gets relabeled. Public relations becomes “authority engineering.” A single citation becomes proof of visibility. A favorable answer becomes a ranking.
Those substitutions are commercially convenient and analytically weak.
Current platform guidance also argues against treating AEO as a bag of special hacks. Google says its existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no additional technical requirements or special schema are needed for inclusion. Google’s newer generative-search guidance is even more direct: from its perspective, optimizing for generative features in Google Search is still SEO, and tactics such as special AI text files are not required for that surface.
At the same time, the market is wider than Google Search. OpenAI documents a search-specific crawler, OAI-SearchBot, which site owners can manage independently from GPTBot. ChatGPT search can return current answers with linked sources, and those answers may be influenced by query rewrites, location, and memory settings. The practical job therefore includes measuring several answer surfaces and diagnosing the public evidence available to them.
The result is overlap with SEO, not identity with every SEO workflow.
The five observable jobs of AEO
The definition separates AEO into five jobs. They form a sequence, but a company can succeed at an earlier stage and still fail at a later one.
| Observable job | The question to ask | Evidence a team can inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Find | Can the system or its retrieval layer access useful public information about the entity? | Crawl controls, indexed pages, retrievable documents, product feeds, profiles |
| Understand | Does the answer associate the entity with the right category, products, locations, attributes, and use cases? | Accurate branded answers, consistent descriptions, entity and product facts |
| Substantiate | Is there enough owned and independent evidence to support a claim or comparison? | Documentation, case evidence, reviews, reporting, expert analysis, institutional sources |
| Cite | Does the answer visibly link to a source, and does that source support the nearby claim? | Citation presence, destination URL, source type, claim-source fit |
| Recommend | Does the entity appear in a relevant, unbranded consideration set under stated constraints? | Shortlist presence, recommendation language, position, rationale, repeatability |
This chain prevents a common mistake: treating recognition as recommendation. An AI system can produce a competent description of a company when asked by name yet omit it from “best option for…” questions. It can also cite a company’s documentation without recommending the company, or recommend a product while citing an independent review.
Each outcome answers a different business question.
What AEO includes
AEO begins with customer questions and observable outcomes. Its practical scope usually includes:
- Question design: identifying the discovery, comparison, validation, and troubleshooting questions that matter in the buyer journey.
- Visibility measurement: recording mentions, recommendations, citations, source patterns, accuracy, and stability across defined platforms and repeated runs.
- Evidence diagnosis: finding gaps or contradictions across the company website, documentation, product information, case studies, reviews, media coverage, expert discussion, and other public sources.
- Execution coordination: routing technical issues to SEO and web teams, product evidence to product marketing, independent authority to communications, and customer proof to customer or reputation teams.
- Outcome validation: checking whether observable visibility changes are followed by qualified referrals, engaged visits, leads, sales influence, or reduced misinformation.
This scope does not require a new department. In many companies, the useful work already belongs to established teams. AEO’s distinct contribution may be the cross-platform question set, the measurement discipline, and the diagnosis connecting public evidence to observed answers.
What AEO does not establish
AEO is not direct access to a model’s beliefs or hidden ranking logic. A visible citation is not a complete record of every influence on an answer. A repeated mention is not proof of preference. A referral is not automatically incremental revenue.
It is also not a guarantee of inclusion. Google explicitly says that meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot so content can be surfaced in ChatGPT search, but that accessibility condition does not promise a citation or recommendation.
A precise AEO claim therefore sounds like this: “Across this defined prompt panel and testing window, the company appeared in 18 of 30 relevant answers.” It does not sound like: “The model trusts the company.”
A real operational example
Consider a publisher whose pages are indexed by Google but whose robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot. Google eligibility and ChatGPT search eligibility are now different operational facts. Fixing that crawler rule may make the content available to one additional retrieval system. It does not prove the content will be selected, cited, or used in a recommendation.
The AEO task is to document the break in the chain:
- Known by Google: the pages are crawlable and indexed on that search surface.
- Unavailable to search: OpenAI states that pages opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, although a navigational link can still appear.
- Technical correction: the site can revise access controls if that matches its publishing policy.
- Outcome retest: after the documented adjustment period, the team reruns the same relevant prompt panel and records whether citation or recommendation behavior changes.
That is a testable intervention. “Add an AI file and become the answer” is not.
How a marketing leader should use the definition
Use the definition as a procurement and planning filter. Before funding a program, require four things:
- Defined surfaces: name the consumer interfaces being measured, not merely “AI.”
- Defined questions: connect prompts to real buyer situations, stages, locations, and constraints.
- Defined outcomes: separate mentions, citations, recommendations, referrals, and business results.
- Defined evidence: show which facts are platform-documented, directly observed, inferred, or still unknown.
If a proposal cannot answer those questions, the problem is not missing sophistication. The proposal is not yet measurable.
The next practical step is to read the distinctions in mentions, citations, recommendations, and referrals and then build a buyer-question prompt panel before choosing tactics.
What remains uncertain
No public definition can settle the category while products, retrieval systems, and user behavior continue to change. Platforms do not disclose every system involved in generating or selecting an answer, and interfaces may change faster than an annual marketing plan.
Our definition should change if it stops helping teams distinguish observable work from speculation. For now, it sets a useful boundary: AEO is the disciplined attempt to improve and measure an entity’s performance in AI-mediated discovery. It is not proof that marketers can control an answer engine.
If your market position and AI visibility do not match, begin with the buyer questions that matter and inspect the evidence chain behind the answers.

This article is a synthesis of current first-party documentation and AgenQuest’s editorial measurement standard. We reviewed Google’s guidance for AI features in Search, Google’s explanation of crawling, indexing, and serving, OpenAI’s crawler documentation, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT search guidance on August 27, 2026.
