What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Plain-English Guide for Consumer Brands

July 17, 2026 · Agenquest Research

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making a brand visible, cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links. AEO optimizes for being the answer itself: the brand an AI names when a shopper asks what to buy. You will also see this called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or LLM optimization. They describe the same practice.

Why this exists now

The usage numbers stopped being speculative some time ago. OpenAI put ChatGPT at 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, up from 400 million a year before. More to the point for a brand, a Semrush and Exploding Topics survey of 2,338 US adults in July 2026 found that 41% of consumers have already bought something because an AI chatbot recommended it, and that 47.54% at least occasionally ask an AI about a company or seller before buying.

For a growing share of shopping questions, the AI response is the entire journey. The shopper asks, reads, and acts. There is no page two and no list of ten blue links. A few brands get named and everyone else is invisible.

That creates a problem the old SEO playbook cannot reach. AI engines do not rank your pages. They assemble answers out of trust signals scattered across the open web: reviews, community discussion, press citations, video transcripts and structured data. Most brands have never deliberately managed any of those.

How AEO differs from SEO

SEOAEO

Primary surfacesGoogle, Bing results pagesChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews
Key inputsKeywords, backlinks, on-page factorsReviews, citations, community presence, entities, quotable content

The two overlap, because AI engines crawl the same web and technical fundamentals still matter. But SEO on its own is no longer sufficient. The sources these engines weight most heavily, including Reddit threads, verified review platforms, YouTube transcripts and earned press, sit largely outside a traditional SEO scope.

The signals that actually move AI answers

Research and cross-engine testing point consistently to five signal families.

Reviews and reputation. The depth, recency and sentiment of real customer reviews on the platforms AI engines trust.

Citations and digital PR. Mentions in publications these engines cite. The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) found that verbatim-quotable content outperforms plain attributed citations, lifting visibility 41% against 28%, because a direct quote is a self-contained unit a model can reproduce intact.

Community presence. Authentic, disclosed participation where your category is discussed. Perplexity in particular leans hard on Reddit.

Structure and entity signals. Schema markup, consistent entity naming, and content written in self-contained answer blocks a machine can parse and quote.

Video with transcripts. YouTube is the one social platform whose content meaningfully feeds AI answers, because transcripts are crawlable text. Google AI Overviews correlate strongly with YouTube presence.

Different engines weight these differently. Perplexity favours community sources and recency, Google AI Overviews correlate with YouTube, and ChatGPT draws on Wikipedia and comparison content. That spread is why single-channel efforts underperform.

The opportunity for challenger brands

AI engines default to big, recognisable names, but only in an information vacuum. The same Princeton study found that a fifth-ranked site could gain roughly 115% in AI visibility through citation optimization.

The recognition monopoly is fragile. Modest, well-placed distinguishing signals let a challenger break into answers that an incumbent currently owns by default, and the gains favour whoever moves while the rest of the category is still ignoring the channel.

How fast does AEO work?

It depends on the engine, and anyone who answers without that caveat is guessing. Retrieval-augmented systems, meaning Perplexity, search-enabled ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, pick up new content within days, so early movement usually shows inside the first 30 days. Deeper authority, built from citation depth, review volume and community trust, compounds over three to six months.

Treat promises of instant AI rankings with suspicion. Base-model updates are infrequent and outside anyone’s control, which is exactly why retrieval engines are the honest measurement channel.

Where to start

Before optimizing anything, find out what AI currently says about you. Run the real questions your customers ask, several times each in fresh sessions, and write down which brands get named, which sources are cited, and whether you appear at all. That audit is the strategy document.

AgenQuest runs it free for consumer brands: a prompt panel built around your category, run live through ChatGPT with web search on, with the answers and cited sources sent to you in plain business language.
